The mystery of the Nazca lines

A spider, a monkey, a whale, a condor, a hummingbird, an ‘astronaut’ and many other geoglyphs adorn the Nazca pampa in southern Peru since over 2000 years. How have they been drown? What purpose for? The mystery remains unsolved since their discovery in the 1920’s despite the successive of work of archeologists. We first thought of an astronomical calendar, then, divine frescoes and even extraterrestrial signals.

The Nazca lines were discovered in a Peruvian desert en 1926 and they are part of the World Heritage of UNESCO since 1994. These big lines are in the ground. They also called geoglyphs (GEO: earth and glyphs: graphical representation) and are located in the heart of the Nazca plateau, which is one of the driest regions of the world. Geoglyphs were developed by the Nazca civilization, a pre-Inca civilization among the oldest in the world having lived in the southern Peru between 300 BC and the IX century AD. The Nazca lines are the evidence of that civilization was highly developed, because even today they remain one of the greatest mysteries of the planet…

The Nazca lines have been drown nor in one time, nor in the same place, nor in a unique point. Many have been made over others, older.
Contrary to the myth this lines would be visible from an airplane, the oldest geoglyphs (400 BC) were seen actually from the ground.
Almost all emblematic animal figures, like the spider and the hummingbird, consist of a single line. A person can travel the entire route and never intersect the line. They crossed the ravines, climb hills without changing their shapes or straightness of lines and can be several kilometers! The most impressive is that they are perfectly proportioned, so we know that the designers have never been high in the air to see the result.
This suggests that the geoglyphs was used like a ceremonial procession trails. Later, following a population explosion, it is possible that the number of participants has been increased in the rituals, including the ground of geoglyphs have opened and have become geometric. There are some like trapeziums and some exceed 600 meters to 2km long.
Scientist believes ‘that they are images to be seen but also the scene where they walked and used as part of religious ceremonies’. To support this thesis, geophysicists have measured the magnetic field on a trapeze around Yunama, a village near Palpa. They found slight perturbations of the magnetic signal indicating that human activity had plunged the ground, especially around the platforms.
Finally, the Nazca lines are merely drown to organize ritual ceremonies.

The theory developed by Maria Reiche says that the drawings on the ground correspond to the constellations; it is subject to serious doubt.
Many others theories have been advanced to try to explain these gigantic drawings: calendar, signs of the underground, water sources, base of the alien landing…

None of the theories has been universally accepted and the Nazca lines still retain their mysteries.
Nobody knows how the Nazca people were able to draw that perfect as gigantic shapes…
