Over the volcanos

Peru and especially Bolivia are countries where many volcanoes dominate these areas.
Across the broader South Lipez, they are kings …
Explore the volcanic areas is often a headache because you have to do in good conditions, and especially good company.
Real lands straight out of another planet, lunar landscapes and often times Martian volcanoes will always be there to guide you, only fixed points in this maze of lagoons and geological formations…

Below is some general information as an example.

Licancabur (Bolivia)

Licancabur is a volcano on the border of Chile and Bolivia, a sort of icon in the region. It is part of the Central Andean Volcanic Zone and is presented as an almost perfect cone of 1500 meters high and 9 km in diameter. The volume of the cone is estimated at 35 km3. The western flank of the volcano is more developed than the eastern flank, which is explained by its location on the edge of the Salar de Atacama basin. Although this volcano is one of the best known parts of the world, few geological studies exist about it.

Tunupa volcano (Bolivia)

Not far of the Salar de Uyuni, the volcano is located in Tunupa.
Found in this part of Bolivia’s volcanic landscapes similar to the San Pedro de Atacama in Chile, as well as llamas, animals “icons” of the Cordillera. Alpacas, vicuna, pink flamingos and other birds are also loyal fellow travelers in this region where silence is king. Here, the Cordillera Occidental aligns a string of volcanoes above unique colorful desert landscapes. Because of the arid climate, almost all the volcanoes, even those that exceed 6000 m, are devoid of glaciers and therefore accessible to hikers, a chance! Among these volcanoes, Tunupa is part …

Volcan Sajama (Bolivia)

Among the legends of the Altiplano, this is the best known, that of Sajama, the highest volcano in Bolivia rising to over 6500 m.
Huayna Potosi, Condoriri Ancohuma or Illampu had the same dream: to be the highest of all!
“Pacha”, the creator tired of these arguments, ordered the cessation of hostilities. The Illimani was the big winner. But an ambitious neighbor challenged his victory. Disturbed in his sleep, “Pacha” decided to punish the insolent by cutting his head. They then heard the hiss of the projectile and the terrible noise of impact. When the dust disappeared, missing the entire upper part of the unwary. Its head rested far on the Altiplano and now called Sajama, or the “remote” in Aymara.

Misti volcano (Peru)

The volcano El Misti is a magnificent andesitic stratovolcano in the regular conical crown of nested craters. True sentinel throughout the region, it is ranked among the most threatening volcanoes on our planet. Indeed, the city of Arequipa and its 900 000 inhabitants is located just 15 km east of the active cone. This great city of Peru, already hard hit by the volcano in the 15th century, in the future could be dangerously affected by further eruptions, even moderate.

Ubinas volcano (Peru)

Ubinas volcano is located about sixty miles east of the city of Arequipa. It lies in a valley where it dominates the town of Ubinas which is home to nearly 4000 residents.
The Ubinas is, with the Misti, one of the most active volcanoes of Peru. It has identified 17 eruptions since 1550. Ubinas volcano has a caldera at its summit of 1100 x 1200 m. The edge of this caldera is 100 to 150 m above the floor of the caldera. The floor of this caldera is cut in its southern part by a crater about 500 m in diameter and 300 m deep.

Ollagüe volcano (Bolivia)

We are in the heart of South Lipez Province, south of the Salar de Uyuni. At the Chilean border, rumbles the volcano Ollagüe (5868 m); fumaroles testify to its activity.
Neighbor of Licancabur, Ollagüe volcano (also called Oyahué) is a composite stratovolcano rather massive peak 2100 m above the altiplano. All indices of activities are now severely eroded, especially by the last glaciation which we find many clues in the form of moraines.
